Threatened Olmsted Legacy
by Cheryl dos Remedios and Eliza Davidson from the Washington Park Arboretum. SR-520 freeway construction is once again threatening one of Seattle 's most culturally important landscapes: the Washington Park Arboretum. To bring a new bridge up to code, and to accommodate new bike lanes, a new 4-lane bridge would take up twice as much space as it does today. The 6-lane option will by 4 times wider.Neither option has an appreciable affect on commute times. The cheapest option for the bridge is $2 billion short of money. That is more than the entire cost of the ill-fated monorail project that was cancelled by Seattle voters in Nov, 2005.
